Abstract

During the festivity of St. James the Apostle in 1773, an unprecedented work was performed in Compostela: the «sacred melodramatic poem» titled De las venturas de España la de Galicia es mejor. This is a unique work in its genre in regard to its subject matter, which deals with the novelized relocation of the body of St. James from Jerusalem to Galicia. This study presents and analyzes the circumstances surrounding such a unique performance, which was carried out as a result of the Chapter's determination, financing the costs and putting it at the disposal of the whole music chapel of the cathedral during a period in which relations with the Archiepiscopate and the city's authorities were complicated. Undoubtedly, this is yet another example of the cathedral clergy's interest in promoting and high light St. James, as well as Compostela and its cathedral, towards the end of the eighteenth century.
