Abstract

During 1982 through 1986, 257 isolates of yersiniae were recovered from faecal samples submitted from approximately 2250 patients to the University of British Columbia Health Sciences Centre Hospital Vancouver, British Columbia. The most common isolates were Yersinia frederiksenii 72 (28.0%) and Yersinia enterocolitica serotypes 0:6,30 (28 isolates, 10.9%), 0:7,8 (22 isolates 8.6%) and 0: 5 (21 isolates 8.2%), which were recovered regularly throughout the time period. Yersinia enterocolitica serotypes 0:8, 0:5,27, and 0:4,32 previously described as the most commonly found yersiniae in British Columbia accounted for only 5 (1.9%) of isolates recovered.
