Abstract

The Finnish Cadet Corps trained Finnish boys, mostly from Swedish-speaking upper class families, to become officers in the Russian army and, from 1881-1901, in the Finnish army. The article shows how changes in Finnish society and in the relationship between Finland and Russia affected the Corps and led ultimately to its closure. From the 1860s the Swedish-speaking Corps became increasingly isolated as a Finnish-speaking society developed. In the late 1890s, principally as a measure of russification in Finland, the Russian military authorities aimed to reform the Corps as a standard Russian cadet corps. This reversal of earlier Russian goodwill led to the Corps' closure in 1903.
