Abstract

The gravity of the problem connected with alterations in Plane trees in Lombardy has necessitated an investigation into the possible causes of the phenomenon. In this first report of the series the symptomology is presented. This can be divided into three fundamental patterns. In the first (I) plants manifest a general ill health state with microphylly and chlorosis. Alterations of this type are generally connected with fungal colonization of the root system. In the second (II) plants show necrotic spots along the leaf veins and blighted shoots with dead clusters of leaves simulating late frost damage. On older branches cankers of various sizes are present. The third (III) situation is characterized by wilting of entire branches. The phenomenon originates from cortical necroses and spreads successively to the wood tissues. These fundamental patterns are often found in the same plant. The observations have been carried in the field since 1968 and trees have been examined from roots to crown, in the case of the former by uprooting the tree and the latter by using elevators. A full photographic record including black and white, colour and « false colour » (infra-red sensitive) films, has been made of all symptoms so that progressive alterations could be checked. Lines of further investigation are discussed as well as possible interactions of metropolitan and environmental factors as etiological agents and the possible role of vectors.
