Abstract

La familia Clethraceae está constituida por dos géneros: Clethra y Purdiaea, ambos presentes en las Antillas Mayores, y todas sus especies son endémicas en las respectivas islas donde se encuentran. Clethra presenta tres especies: una en Cuba y dos en Jamaica; Purdiaea presenta 12 especies, todas cubanas. En el presente trabajo se otrece la descripcion de la familia, los géneros y claves intragenéricas e infragenéricas, asi como comentarios sobre la distribución y la ecología de las especies. The family Clethraceae has two genera: Clethra and Purdiaea; both occur in the Greater Antilles, and all the species are endemic in the respective island where they in habit. Clethra comprises three species: one in Cuba and, two in Jamaica; Purdiaea has 12 species, all of them are endemic to Cuba. It is presented, in this paper, the description of the family and genera, as well as the intergeneric and, infrageneric keys. Comments about the distribution and the ecology of the species are given.
