Abstract

The paper briefly reviews the changing pattern of land uses in the uplands of Britain over the last two hundred years, and discusses the problems facing the land user in deciding on the system of management to be employed. The author separates the problems into three categories: A Problems in the choice of the system of management and the allocation of land to different uses. B Problems in the collection of data needed to make the choices in A. C Problems in improving the techniques of crop production. He concludes that greater emphasis on research into the problems in Categories A and B—even at the expense of those in C—is desirable.
