Abstract

The history of Australian forestry is traced showing the emergence of conflict between the forest industry and conservation movement. While State governments responded in various ways, the politicization of this conflict led to Federal Government intervention through constitutional and other powers relating to the control of exports, imports and foreign investments, and the nomination of forests to Heritage registers. Recently, a more conciliatory and cooperative approach to forestry has been developed, and has resulted in a National Forest Policy agreed by Federal and State Governments. However, implementation of the policy remains to be fully worked out.
