In the year 1916 the writer made a communication in this Journal regarding the copy of a basin by Paulus van Vianen in 1637, in the possession of Jhr. M. Snouckaert, and at that time offered the suggestion that this might be identical with a similar ewer and basin, embossed on both sides, from the Hogguer Sale (1817), The writer is now in the position to state that, as appears from the inventory of Snouckaert's estate, he was correct in his supposition: further that this ewer and basin, to which no reference has ever been made in literature, has now been mentioned in the Catalogue of a Sale at Christie's, and he is enabled to give illustrations of them which throw new light upon van Vianen's work as an embosser; finally, that this masterpiece of the great silversmith might possibly be acquired by the Rijks-Museum.
