Abstract

The article critically revises literature and findings on the relationship between socio-economic development and democratization. Major hypotheses are illustrated and a specific analysis of recent events in different geopolitical areas of the world is offered. The findings support the case for a positive relationship. However, exceptions are abundant and the role of crucial intervening variables, social and political, is also discussed and emphasized. The Author underlines that each region is characterized by specific patterns of interaction and that general findings should be red and understood by taking regional context into close consideration.
