Abstract

During 1970-71 observations have been carried out on the morphological and anatomical aspects of flower bud development on chestnut (Castanea sativa, L.). Results have shown that: a) the earliest indications of the flower differentiation have been detected 30-40 days after the beginning of growth; at this stage tipical structural modifications have been observed in the apical meristems, that lead to the development of a catkin primordia; b) the development of these primordia stops at the end of summer, and start again in the spring, at the beginning of growth; c) the development of the several male flowers in the catkin and of the female inflorescence occurs during the first stage of the spring growth, before the bloom; d) the development of the male flowers in the catkins starts before that of the female inflorescences.
