Abstract

Complex words can be investigated with two different methods: the synthetic one (word-formation, TG models) and the analytic one (the study of WORD-TRANSPARENCY). This article presents a comprehensive theory of word-transparency based on the two criteria of DEGREE OF TRANSPARENCY (Leichtigkeit der Durchsicht) and SEMANTIC STRENGTH (Bildstärke). After a discussion of the role of word transparency in the history of English the theory is applied and tested in several ways (informant questioning, corpus investigation, the effect of word-transparency in various linguistic structures). It is shown that the theory can be applied to such fields as psycholinguistics and foreign language teaching, and that it can be extended to an overall theory of transparency valid on levels beyond the word-unit and providing material toward an answer to the question of the relation between language, thought and reality.
