Abstract

The doctrine of poetic justice was one of the central tenets in the aesthetic credo of Classicism and held the rank of a literary dogma in English criticism at the beginning of the eighteenth century. One of the first to question this rule fundamentally was Joseph Addison in his Spectator 40 (1711). He became engaged in a crucial controversy on the significance of poetic justice with John Dennis, one of the most fervent advocates of the traditional position. The present paper focuses on this important debate as well as on the rationale and the variability of the two conflicting paradigms concerning poetic justice in the critical oeuvres of the two antagonists.
