Abstract

This paper presents a review of research literature in the areas of perception of and response to environmental change. This literature is drawn from journals and reports representing a broad array of disciplines and is organized in two sections, urban change and rural change. The urban section includes literature on growth, urban renewal, historic preservation, gentrification and neighborhood conservation, and mobility and relocation. The rural section includes literature on natural and recreational environments, agriculture, rural development, and energy production and development. The relevance of environmental-change research to designers and planners is discussed, areas and issues meriting increased research attention are identified, and the significant elements of the process of perceiving and responding to environmental change are outlined.
