Abstract

Image congruity refers to the fit between the meanings and values associated with a place and a person's image of self. Image congruity in residential environments promotes attachment to place and the consequent benefits associated therewith. This paper defines image congruity and links it to other constructs in the social-psychological literature: extended self, place identity, and social imageability. Empirical study of a residential neighborhood found qualities of the neighborhood's image to be significantly related to place attachment (defined as preference). Results also suggest the neighborhood image covaries with features under the purview of physical planners and designers and thus may be subject to planning and design intentions.
