Abstract

Budgetary constraints have made maximizing efficiency an increasingly important goal in local planning programs. This paper makes an original contribution to the field by collecting and analyzing data on a variety of park acquisition methods in order to develop recommendations that will improve the efficiency of local parks planning. These methods have previously been mainly discussed separately in the literature; comparative studies have constituted the exception rather than the rule. The paper identifies a wide array of techniques for the provision of parkland, formulates research questions based on a review of the literature, investigates them using a nationwide survey, and draws conclusions regarding practical implications for planners to use in park acquisition programs. Suggestions for further research are also made.
