Abstract

The paper employs recent developmental theories to investigate the subject of beggars and the gospel in Lucan writings. It argues that contrary to current perceptions, Luke provides no basis for charity as a response to the phenomenon of beggars. Instead, intervention with a total transformation of the person's condition constitutes the good news for the beggar. This enables the person to take his/her place in the πολιτεία, an alternative to being a 'social burden'. This is as true of Luke's treatment of the subject as it is of the treatment of beggars by communities in the background of Luke and Acts. Such a response to beggars is in line with the theory of human development.
