Abstract

The genealogy with which Mathew's gospel begins has a significant role in equipping the reader to understand Matthew's story of Jesus. It serves to place the story of Jesus firmly within the story of Israel and enables the reader to see the significance of Matthew's description of Jesus as both son of Abraham and son of David. But by stressing the importance of the exile as a crux historiae in the story of Israel and with its emphasis on Christology and fulfilment, the genealogy answers the question of the precise way in which Jesus as the Messiah brings resolution to the story of Israel, a story full of promise but requiring the fulfilment of these promises. The genealogy presents Jesus the Messiah as the one who will in fact bring Israel's exile to an end and in this way gives the reader a fresh theological perspective on the gospel as a whole.
