Abstract

Textbook illustrations represent, in spite of their increasing quantitative and specific importance in textbooks, a subject area which is still rather neglected by the scholars devoting to didactics or to the history of education or by the historians themselves. This essay sets up a first approach to this subject by referring to the Spanish history textbooks which were published between 1900 and 1990. It analyses on the basis of the „Napoleonic wars" the type of illustrations (allowed or censored) which were used during each of the different political periods of the Spanish XXth century, as well as their function from a more directly „illustrative" or „documentary" viewpoint.
