Abstract

The magnetic spherule content of recent ombrotrophic peat is estimated by measurement of magnetic susceptibility and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization. Results are combined with the annual moss-increment method of peat dating to reconstruct the recent history of magnetic atmospheric fallout at four sites in south, central and eastern Finland. The results demonstrate a direct relationship between the fallout and the combustion of fossil fuels.
