This paper is an introduction to the special issue of Ambio (Ambio Vol. 26 No 1, February 1997) commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the publication of Svante Arrhenius' landmark paper on the greenhouse effect. Arrhenius' most significant achievements in this particular field of science are briefly summarized and an attempt is made to provide a realistic explanation of the fundamental physical processes contributing to the greenhouse effect
