Abstract

The investigations carried out on the relationship of pumpkin mosaic virus (PMV) with its aphid vector, Aphis craccivora revealed that preacquisition fasting of the aphids was essential for the transmission of the virus. The aphids could acquire and inoculate the virus in a very short period of 20 sec and 30 sec, respectively. Though even a single viruliferous aphid per plant was able to transmit PMV, however, maximum infection was obtained with 15 aphids per plant. The aphids retained the infectivity up to 2 h, beyond which they became non-viruliferous. Based on these studies, the virus-vector relationship was assigned to be of "non-persistent" type. Die Untersuchungen iiber die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen dem Pumpkin mosaic-Virus (PMV) und dem Vektor Aphis craccivora haben ergeben, dafi ein Praakquisitions-Fasten der Blattlause fiir die Obertragung des Virus notwendig ist. Die Blattlause konnten das Virus innerhalb von 20 sec aufnehmen und Pflanzen in der sehr kurzen Zeit von 30 sec infizieren. Schon eine einzelne virustragende Blattlaus pro Pflanze reichte zur Obertragung des PMV aus, jedoch die maximale Infektion wurde mit 15 Lausen pro Pflanze erreicht. Die Blattlause verloren die Fahigkeit, das Virus zu ubertragen, bereits nach 2 h. Auf Grund dieser Untersuchungen wurde die Virus-Vektor-Beziehung der Gruppe ,,nichtper sis tent" zugeordnet.
