Abstract

Quasi random motions, correlated in time and space, are generated within the lowest 2 km of the atmosphere as a result of the drag of the underlying surface on the wind, and by buoyancy forces when the lower layers are warmed by contact with the ground. These motions are called turbulence and play a very important role in determining the vertical profiles of temperature, humidity and wind speed and how much heat and moisture are transferred from the surface into the main body of the atmosphere. This review describes the problem, outlines some of the observations and attempts to give simple methods for estimating what is going on within the boundary layer without resorting to complex measurements.
