Abstract

Recent developments in high energy particle physics are reviewed. The importance of performing experiments at the highest energies is emphasized, with particular reference to the SPS collider at CERN, which provides the highest energy collisions available in the laboratory at present. A number of important observations at the SPS collider are outlined, such as the discovery of the W and Z bosons, and studies of the scattering of quarks and gluons. A brief account of some topics in cosmic ray physics is then given, since such experiments may give us glimpses of physics in an even higher energy domain. Finally some future prospects in high energy experiments are reviewed.
