Abstract

The property which is common to all porous crystals is the possession of a regular network of interconnected cavities or channels within their structure; that is to say they contain an internal surface and volume. Access to this volume is restricted by pores of a regular shape and unique dimensions, whilst the internal surface displays a selectivity based upon electrostatic interactions. These properties can combine to give a highly selective microporous adsorbent. This useful quality makes certain porous crystals very valuable in a number of different applications. Examples are given illustrating this selectivity and revealing the principles upon which it is based.
