Abstract

Transmission electron microscopy allows images of crystal defects to be obtained at resolutions which can approach 0.2 nm. In this article the importance of crystal defects—line defects, planar defects and three-dimensional defects—on the properties crystals is briefly discussed before outlining the methods of obtaining defect images. Examples are used to illustrate how our understanding of phenomena, which are controlled by these defects, can be understood from the observations made in the electron microscope. Examples are taken from electronic materials, from rapidly cooled alloys and from deformed samples and are used to show how the different imaging modes allow the microscopist to obtain information at an appropriate resolution so that an unambiguous interpretation of the nature and the role of crystal defects can be reached.
