Abstract

Two poems from Bodleian Library MS. Eng. Poet f. 9, here edited and published for the first time, present a feigned correspondence between Sir Philip Sidney and Lady Penelope Rich. The first epistle contains a panoramic view of Sidney's life and provides an explanation for his disappointed courtship of Lady Penelope, while the second letter, written in the bride's persona, offers a defense of her conduct and a vivid portrayal of her tormented conscience. Because the two unsigned poems appear in a heterogeneous miscellany containing works by many different early seventeenth-century poets, the question of authorship remains highly speculative, but the verse letters do follow closely the model of one of the most popular Elizabethan collections, Michael Drayton's Englands Heroicall Epistles. The glosses appearing at the end of the Bodleian poems are of special interest because they suggest how Astrophil and Stella and the Arcadia were interpreted in the decade or two immediately after Sidney's death.
