Abstract

The Ayoréode were one of the ethnic units of the Chaco living by hunting, gathering, and a little cultivation. In the 1950-s most of them found their way into mission stations. There the missionaries tried to teach them Christianity and a settled way of life. Culture change brought many problems, and recently economic problems and social anomy were aggravating. The Bolivian development institution APCOB, run by foreign anthropologists, startet a project to help some Ayoréode. Unfortunately, no investigation into the actual situation of that people was conducted, and there were many managerial mistakes in planning and in running the project. It was a complete failure, for all Ayoréode left the new settlement founded under the auspices of APCOB. Anthropologists are not necessarily good development agents.
