Abstract

Claiming that it is impossible to study the development of «sentiments» within the family without analysing material and property relations at the various levels of society and within the various social types, the authors of this paper urge the study of the specific «languages» that regulate interpersonal relations. They observe in particular (together with B. Bernstein) the existence of two types of codes, an «elaborate» one and a «limited» one, to be found in the various contexts. The article goes on to develop numerous examples of historical and anthropological situations, analyses of which already exist or could be developed, concerning in particular the condition of women, marriage strategies, the relations established in child rearing, relations between brothers and sisters and the situations created in the various circumstances of day-to-day life in common.
