Abstract

In 1582 the «Confraternita della Morte» of Faenza obtained the privilege to set a convict sentenced to death free every year on its patron's day. This research is devoted to the history of this privilege, the conditions of its efficacy and the social dynamics it set in motion. During the two centuries' application, it was marked by a variable course resulting from repeated interferences by the authorities: far from vonverting into an established right, it remained a sort of grant liable to renegotiation. This article presents an analysis directed to point out and decode the symbolic scanning constituting the public rituals of liberation, the highest celebretion point of the Confraternity's prestige. This aim is achived through both a comparison with the parallel rituals performed by the «Confraternita della Morte» of Bologna and with the other public cereminy in which the brothers had the leading role: execition.
