The final report of the Acharyya Ramamurti Committee, set up to review the National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986, was tabled in parliament in early January this year. While this report has not yet been made available to the public, the committee produced a perspective paper earlier which was distributed widely. This article examines the measures suggested in the NPE 1986, critically reviews the modifications and changes proposed in the perspective paper and offers alternative suggestions on some aspects so that a wider debate may be initiated on vital issues in education.
