Abstract

Minority civil rights groups are commonly seen as vehicles through which the struggle against racism can be fought. While scholars have focused on their demand for equal opportunity, little analysis has been focused on the content of these demands and their relationship to other values and ideals. This paper analyzes the way in which class interest and economic philosophy expresses itself in the political program of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the largest and oldest Mexican American civil rights organization. The findings indicate that while LULAC fought for equal rights and opportunities for its people, its demands were anchored in a world view that embraced loyalty to the United States, individual achievement, and free market capitalism.
