Abstract

The question of the origins of the Berlin Painter and of his relationship to the masters of the preceding generation is examined. Vases, mostly cups, attributed to the Carpenter Painter and to the HP Painter, and a few other unassigned cups, are seen through Morellian analysis as the earliest work of the Berlin Painter. These pieces show that the young artist's master was Phintias. The connection with Phintias is reinforced by an examination of the cups by the Salting Painter, who decorated cups fashioned by Phintias, and is akin to the Carpenter Painter in style. Five more pieces are here attributed to the Salting Painter, one giving his name: Hermokrates. It is proposed that his affinity in style with the earliest Berlin Painter is due to their common training in Phintias's workshop.
