Abstract

Shape-note music has often been misperceived as a monolithic and static tradition, isolated from the crises of its cultural context. This article attempts to show how, from 1880 to 1920, the shape-note community held a fractious internal debate about its tradition's future direction that linked itself to a parallel debate in the New South about the benefits and costs of modernity.
