Abstract

During the Great Awakening (1740-45), the Narragansett and a number of other New England Indian groups converted to the "New Light" of this first American revival. In their conversion they brought together under new moral authority several disparate aspects of their complex identity as a colonized, struggling Indian people. In converting to a religion of the oppressed, they both identified with elements of the wider society and set themselves apart from that society.
