Abstract

The archivolts of the Sainte-Anne portal, the south door on the west façade of Notre-Dame de Paris, contain seventy-one figured voussoir blocks from the 12th and 13th centuries. They constitute the largest group of unstudied Gothic sculptures on a major monument. These notes on the forty-eight 12th-century voussoirs offer some new observations on the iconography, style and dating in an effort to put these remarkable sculptures in their proper perspective. Four general subject groups are identified, confirming Mâle's thesis that the blocks were combined from at least two earlier portals. The major figure styles are briefly characterized and related to the 12th-century tympanum and upper lintel. Finally, the newly discovered fragments of architectural ornament, which add important new evidence regarding the portal, provide a firm archeological basis for a date of ca. 1150-55 for the 12th-century sculpture now assembled in the Sainte-Anne portal.
