Abstract

Grimm research: new achievements and tasks ahead. Despite numerous new editions of and commentaries on some of the Grimm brothers' works and letters, and various continuations of their scholarly work (e. g. the dictionary), many desiderata remain. The foundation of the Grimm Brothers Museum in Kassel, and the anniversaries in 1963 and 1985/6, prompted much new research, enabling future tasks to be more clearly posed. Already underway in various centres are: further cataloguing of the scattered MSS, new editions of some neglected works, and a unified edition of the correspondence. A satisfactory biography must await further preparation of the unpublished material, esp. the notebooks, and special studies of particular phases of their lives, relationships with co-workers, and neglected aspects of their wide-ranging scholarship e. g. in natural science. Their Märchen demand much more detailed study from both folklorists and literary historians. Two crucial tasks remain: the recovery of the Grimms' method, their 'philology of humankind', and of their understanding of the concept Volk, in order rid their work of its unfortunately acquired nimbus of nostalgic antiquarianism. (Lecture given on the occasion of the completion of the three volumes Brüder Grimm Volkslieder, edition, melodies, and commentaries.)
