Abstract

"Out of the throats of the oldest grandmas." On kitsch and triviality, popular and elite culture, and the oral and literate nature of the folk ballad - especially in Goethe and Herder The concept of kitsch has always been controversial. It is used polemically to indicate aesthetic inferiority. The accusation of kitsch is made when naivety is professionally staged, produced and reproduced in order to create a sentimental effect. The concept therefore appears inapplicable to the folk ballad. However, the programmatic turn to folk poetry in the last third of the 18th century - notably in the work of Herder and Goethe - involved the use of folk songs and ballads as sentimental props by a cultural elite which was attracted not least to the kitschy, trivial and commercially sensationalist (street ballad) elements of this apparently oral, authentic genre. After discussing the concept of kitsch, the essay interprets Herder's and Goethe's conception of folk poetry as an expression of cultural differentiation, in the context of the emergent entertainment industry.
