Abstract

Of the many revisions in Conservatoire curriculum and administration effected by Fauré during his fifteen-year tenure as director, those made through the State-issued arrêté and décret of October 8, 1905, are the most significant. Both comprehensive in scope and radical in concept, these reforms revamped decades-old policies in Conservatoire course content and purpose, repertoire, and administrative procedure. Particularly important were those reforms which 1) reorganized the voice classes and obliged students to study exercises and vocalises exclusively during the first year; 2) obliged composition and harmony students to attend regularly -- under penalty of dismissal -- the institution's course in the history of music; and 3) created separate classes of counterpoint and fugue, with separate professors for each. This article discusses both the immediate and long-range effects of Faure's first acts as director, citing in particular their ramifications for music education at the Conservatoire in the early decades of the 20th century and, by consequence, their importance for the musical culture of early 20th-century France.
