Abstract

The first World War reduced musical activities in Paris. However, this was a very important historical period for the Société Nationale and the Société Musicale Indépendante. Besides the organization of the Ligue for the defense of French Music and of the Festivals of French Music, there was an attempt to take advantage of the " union sacrée " climate and to amalgamate the two " avant-garde " societies. This attempt failed but it refueled the quarrel between the musicians trained at the Schola (catholic and nationalist) and those trained at the Conservatory or more independent-minded (with more liberal tendencies). Nevertheless, the failure of the fusion entailed a reorganization of the SN under Fauré's presidency; and the social context proved favorable to the development of new musical caracteristics. The violin sonatas by Fauré and Debussy mark a return to true French musical sources of inspiration. This renewal, which took place in reaction to the styles and genres of nineteenth-century German music, steered French chamber music towards pure music.
