El Jardín Botánico Nacional se fundó en fecha 6 de enero de 1968. En 1976 se adscribe a la Universidad de la Habana como un Centro de Investigación. En esta institución se promueve la investigación sobre sistemática en plantas y hongos cubanos, con vistas a la redacción de la obra “Flora de la República de Cuba” y “Hongos de Cuba”; estudios de conservación de plantas cubanas amenazadas; docencia universitaria en asignaturas relativas a la Botánica; cultivo, custodia científica y documentación de la colección de plantas vivas; educación dirigida al gran público en temas relativos a las plantas y la conservación de estas y sus ecosistemas; así como servicios recreativos.

The National Botanical Garden was founded on January 6, 1968. In 1976 it became part of the University of Havana as a research center. The National Botanical Garden promotes systematic research of Cuban plants and fungi, overseeing the writing of the books "Flora of the Republic of Cuba" and "Fungi from Cuba"; studies endangered Cuban plants and their conservation; offers education at the university level in subjects relating to botany, cultivation, scientific custodianship and documentation of the collection of living plants, as well as education for the general public on issues relating to plants and the conservation of them and their ecosystems.
