The New Testament Society of Southern Africa was founded in 1965 by eleven scholars in the town of Potchefstroom in South Africa. The first issue of meeting proceedings appeared in 1966. A year later, in 1967, the first proper issue of Neotestamentica, the Society’s journal, appeared. Over the years the Society has crossed denominational, cultural and gender boundaries. It currently has 208 members, the majority of which reside in South Africa, but 31 members are from other African countries and 36 reside overseas. The purpose of the Society is to encourage, develop and support scholarship and research in the field of the New Testament and related disciplines in general, and specifically within the South African context, to stimulate effective teaching, to promote publication in the field, and to offer its members opportunities for mutual support, intellectual growth, and professional development.
