This paper examines the role of the Trojan Euphorbus in the death of Patroclus. Hugo Mühlestein has argued that Euphorbus serves as a doublet for Paris, the traditional slayer of Achilles. Since all the evidence that Mülhlestein deduces in support of the Euphorbus/Paris correlation is extra-Iliadic, this argument cannot stand. Euphorbus does function as a doublet, not of Paris, but of Achilles. The purpose of this doubling is to emphasize that Achilles knowingly and willingly brings about his own death. / Étude du rôle joué par le Troyen Euphorbos dans la mort de Patrocle. Puisque la tradition présente Pâris comme le tueur de Patrocle, Hugo Mühlestein pensait qu'Euphorbos était un doublet de Pâris. Cette conclusion doit cependant être rejetée puisqu'aucun des arguments avancés par cet hélléniste ne provient de l'Iliade. Euphorbos est bel et bien un doublet, mais celui d'Achille. Ce parallèle vient en fait souligner qu'Achille a anticipé et même provoqué sa propre mort.
Phoenix, journal of the Classical Association of Canada, publishes scholarly papers embodying original research in all areas of classical studies: the literature, language, history, philosophy, religion, mythology, science, archaeology, art, architecture, and culture of the Greek and Roman worlds from earliest times to about AD 600. Articles should make a fresh, interesting, and significant contribution to our understanding of classical antiquity. The journal welcomes submissions that use new approaches to elucidate their chosen topic and wishes to encourage more submissions on broader themes, as well as those that treat a single question in a detailed manner. Authors should ensure that the argument of the paper is clearly expressed and its general significance made clear. Papers illustrated with black-and-white photographs, maps, and/or line-drawings are welcome. The standard length of a Phoenix article is up to 10,000 words, including notes. Please note that Phoenix does not normally consider for publication articles of longer than 40 pages in manuscript, nor do we consider material that will be published or is under consideration for publication elsewhere. The Classical Association of Canada was founded in 1947 as a national non-profit organization. Its official languages are English and French. It aims to advance the study of the civilizations of the Greek and Roman world, their later influence, and their creative presence in modern culture.
