Abstract

In summary, the empirical data gathered in this experimental study of group selection permit the following conclusions: 1. When group and individual selection operate upon a trait in opposite directions, group selection can accomplish a genetic change which occurs rapidly and is in large magnitude. 2. When group and individual selection operate in the same direction upon a trait, the rate of change of the trait in question can be significantly accelerated relative to the rate of change of that trait under individual selection alone. 3. A process of random extinctions will establish the ideal and favorable conditions for group selection to occur by converting an increasing proportion of the total variance in adult numbers into the between-populations component of the variance. 4. A process of random extinctions can become group selection if there is a differential proliferation of the surviving populations. 5. Migration, defined to be founding of new populations by varying proportions of migrants from two parent populations, does not qualitatively alter the progress of group selection relative to the case with no such migration.
