The Florida Historical Quarterly is the scholarly publication of the Florida Historical Society and has been central to the Society's mission "to prepare, edit and publish articles, sketches, biographies, pamphlets, books and documents, descriptive or illustrative of Florida." First published in 1908 as the short-lived Publications of the Florida Historical Society, the FHQ is now in its 88th volume in 2009. The FHQ publishes peer-reviewed articles, historical notes and documents, and book reviews. Occasional publication of the "The Florida Room" provides a more direct opportunity for readers to engage in recent regional developments. The Florida Historical Quarterly is housed at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida. Connie L. Lester is the current editor.

The Florida Historical Society is the successor of the Historical Society of Florida, founded in 1856. The FHS is the only statewide historical society in Florida and continues the 1856 mission to collect, preserve and publish materials relating to the history of Florida and its peoples. The Society and its library are housed in a WPA-constructed art deco federal building in Cocoa, Florida. The FHS Library houses the Tebeau Collection of more than 6,000 volumes, an extensive map collection, manuscript and photographic holdings and a small collection of artifacts. The Society fulfills its mission – "to prepare, edit and publish articles, sketches, biographies, pamphlets, books and documents, descriptive or illustrative of Florida." – through the publication of the Florida Historical Quarterly and the operation of the Florida Historical Press.
