Abstract

This paper demonstrates that the bimoraic foot plays an important role in stress-assignment, reduplication, and in defining the minimal word in Rotuman. A minimal bimoraic foot is used to generate all instances of surface vowel length in Rotuman. For a variety of borrowings and a small number of native multisyllabic words with final long vowels, underlying stress is posited, with vowel length derived to satisfy the bimoraic foot minimum. This analysis allows for the elimination of all underlying length contrasts in Rotuman and accounts for the distribution of surface long vowels in the language.
