Abstract

Research on strategy tends to emphasize two extremes. On the one hand, single-decision strategies are emphasized when competitive interactions are very intense. On the other, persistent multi-decision strategies are emphasized when competitive interaction is constrained. In between these two extremes are strategies that emerge when competitive interaction fluctuates between periods of intensity and constraint. These may be referred to as medium-term episodic interactions. This study examines competitive interaction in one marketplace, the American commercial aircraft market between 1945 and 1970, finding evidence of episodic interactions that vary in intensity over time. These interactions are described using metaphors, and strategies appropriate to each observed pattern are indicated. Managers can improve strategic planning and implementation within their own industries through an understanding of these interactions.
