This study investigated the dynamics of lateral, vertical, and institutional trust in the work place. Both affect-based and cognitive-based trust in supervisor-subordinate and subordinate-co-worker relationships were examined. A focal employee and his or her supervisor and co-worker rated their affect-based and cognitive-based trust of each other and then rated the focal employee's motivation, risk taking, and assertiveness. The focal employee's affect-based trust of the supervisor and co-workers was found to correlate significantly with ratings of the employee's work place behavior. Ratings of the focal employee's trust of the organization's CEO and top managers (i.e., institutional trust) were also collected. The employee's perception of the effectiveness of the organization's reward practices, as well as his or her intention to leave the organization, were found to relate to institutional trust.
