Abstract

The existence of an electoral system has obscured the systematic violation of human rights in Colombia and focused international public opinion on the issue of drugs and drug-related violence. In fact, a significant aspect of Colombia's violence is related to its elitist political-economic system and the violent defence of class privilege: most victims are peasant and working class activists in trade unions and community groups as well as political leaders of the left who ally with them.
